Key Stage 3 |
| Launched
in 2007, the Key Stage 3 website has a similar format
to the original site, with a questionnaire and data analysis
section; however the feel of the site is completely different
and appropriate to the older age group which it is aimed
at. Peterborough Environment City Trust worked with Crystal
Presentations Ltd, a multimedia design company to create
the site.
Pupils
at two local schools, The King's School and Hampton
College, have been involved in the design and development
of the game. The resulting "Green Planet"
game is spectacular and challenges the pupils to build
their own settlement on a new planet will preserving
the environment. [click

Separate
websites have been created for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 of the
National Curriculum; the complexity of concepts addressed
increasing as appropriate for the key stage.
Each website comprises 3 sections:
  |
 |
a
lifestyles and surroundings questionnaire |
|
 |
|
data
analysis tools (bar charts, pie graphs and tables) |
|
 |
|
interactive games which develop different environmental
themes and allow further discussion |
|
The
Greener Futures website provides an excellent means to develop
pupils' research skills and to encourage questioning about
the kind of world they want to live in now, and in the future.
It links closely with the National Curriculum throughout and
allows for meaningful, cross-curricular study in the areas
of ICT, Maths, Geography, Science, Citizenship, Education
for Sustainable Development and PSHE.
The
information entered by the pupils in each class can be reviewed
using the data analysis tools, they can then compare their
class to the national trends or to the cumulative data for
their school, and assuming more than one class has participated.
The charts produced can provide interesting examples for use
in numeracy lessons on data analysis. The games on the site
whilst being fun also challenge the pupils to think more carefully
about different issues and they can also be used as a basis
for further discussion about environmental issues and behaviour
change. In the Key Stage 1 and 2 sites, short quizzes follow
each game further reinforcing the environmental themes.
The data collected via the Greener Futures questionnaire is
used not only for a large range of classroom activities, but
also informs over 20 sustainability indicators. This data
can therefore be used to inform local, regional and national
policy makers and to record changes over time. All data is
displayed collectively so no individual information entered
by a child can be accessed. Pupils are asked to enter their
postcodes to allow comparisons to made between different areas
of the country. This can be done by the class as well.
Registration
is required to access the questionnaires on the site; there
is no subscription charge.
The games are accessible to everyone.
